Belgrade “Nikola Tesla” Airport Firefighting and Rescue Service have available firefighting equipment and vehicles of adequate capacity, performances and type based on ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) recommendations for seventh category.
In accordance with international standards, Belgrade “Nikola Tesla” Airport Firefighting and Rescue Service have available fast-filling water tank for emergencies and sufficient quantity of foam and compounds for extinguishing of major fires. Service has an efficient radio network, and firemen are in constant contact with the base, traffic center and air traffic control. Belgrade “Nikola Tesla” Airport Firefighting and Rescue Service are based on ICAO and its own classification falls into seventh category.
For the purpose of maximum safety of passengers, crews and aircraft, Belgrade “Nikola Tesla” Airport Firefighting and Rescue Service has updated its operations and already satisfies criteria for eighth of maximum ten categories. Belgrade "Nikola Tesla" Airport Firefighting and Rescue Service at the Airport grounds has an area for practical firefighting exercises containing DC-9 aircraft, landing gear and aircraft engine simulator, concrete facility, tanks of different capacities for spilled fuel fire simulation, as well as retired vehicles for training use of demolition tools. In the period 2007/2008 in Teesside training center in England, a training of certain number of firemen was conducted in the field of practical extinguishing and rescue, as well as training for interventions involving dangerous substances. In the near future the foreseen undertakings are: instructor level of training for certain number of firemen, procurement of large firefighting vehicle 6 x 6, technical firefighting vehicle, vehicles with platform-stairs for fast access to airplanes, passenger evacuation and fire extinguishing, bearing in mind the ever increasing number of large sized aircrafts with hard-to-reach evacuation doors in emergency situations, equipment for disposal of damaged aircrafts from the airport and equipment for interventions involving dangerous substances. Integral part of the Firefighting and Rescue Service are persons certified for providing first aid for AED and BLS (automatic external defibrillator and basic life support). Also, part of Belgrade "Nikola Tesla" Airport Firefighting and Rescue Service is the prevention department which performs the following activities: scheduled and unscheduled inspection of firefighting equipment, hydrants and fire extinguishing devices at the airport complex, security provision for works involving open flame, control and filling of breathing devices (oxygen cylinders for firemen), inspection of alarm areas, supervision of execution of prescribed measures and cooperation with firefighting police.
